Chronic absenteeism poses significant challenges for Georgia schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education reports. To address this, GaDOE launched a statewide program that includes a live attendance dashboard, a public outreach campaign, and tailored assistance for districts with higher needs to help raise daily attendance rates.
In 2025, Georgia updated its attendance laws to prohibit expulsion for absenteeism alone. The new legislation introduces additional reporting obligations and matches measures supporting alternative diploma pathways.
By 2026, Georgia averaged about 14 students per teacher, surpassing the national ratio of 15:1.
