Board Approves Revised School Calendar for 2022-2023

Meeting

Huntington Middle School issued the following announcement on Nov.   15.

The Houston County Board of Education approved a revised District calendar for the 2022-2023 school year. The revision, approved during the November 9 Board meeting, made two changes to the previous version published in June of this year. No changes were made to the current 2021-2022 school year calendar.

For the 2022-2023 school year, the District added two distance learning days for students on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, and Tuesday, February 21, 2023. These days will allow students to utilize digital learning tools from home, while teachers will report to work for site collaboration. Both distance learning days fall immediately after a scheduled holiday for students and staff. “Distance learning days are a great opportunity to focus on the individual needs of students. Teachers will use these days to assign remediation activities for those who need it or enrichment for students who have mastered a certain skill,” said Lazunia Frierson, Assistant Superintendent of District and School Effectiveness.

“Our teachers will also benefit from the extended collaboration time, which will allow them to analyze data to better plan for individualized student learning needs.” The school year will begin as previously scheduled on August 1, 2022, and end May 24, 2023. The school calendar observes these holidays: Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Presidents' Day.

The calendar has a week off in October for fall break, in November for Thanksgiving and the end of March for spring break. Students and employees will also be off for two weeks for Christmas and New Year’s holidays between the first and second semesters. Students will have a half-day the end of each semester, on Dec. 16, 2022, and May 24, 2023. Graduation is planned for May 26 and 27, 2023, the weekend before Memorial Day. MORE P.O. Box 1850

• State and national testing dates

• 180 days of school for students

• 190 work days for faculty, to include 10 professional learning and planning days

• Traditional holidays

• Dividing the year as close as possible to 90 days per semester

• Ending the first semester before Christmas break so students take finals at the end of the semester instead of after the break.

The revised calendar may be viewed on the district’s website on the District Calendar Page.
