Washington D.C.-- U.S. Representative Austin Scott (GA-08) has introduced a bipartisan resolution to rename the U.S. Postal Office in Lakeland, GA, the "Nell Patten Roquemore Post Office" in honor of the late Nell Patten Roquemore, a former Lakeland Postmaster and esteemed member of the community.
According to Representative Scott, "Ms. Nell Patten Roquemore was a model public servant and an active member of the community. Her unwavering commitment to the people of Lanier County was evident in her involvement in numerous local initiatives and organizations. Renaming the post office in her honor is a small way to commemorate her legacy in Lanier County."
The legislation, cosponsored by all thirteen members of the Georgia delegation in the House, recognizes the remarkable contributions made by Roquemore throughout her career. She served as the Lakeland Postmaster, Mayor Pro Tem of Lakeland, secretary to Generals at Moody Air Force Base, and was a local school teacher.
Roquemore's dedication extended beyond her professional roles. She was also the President of The Lanier County Garden Club and served as Co-Chair of Let's Improve Lanier's Appearance (LILA). Her commitment to LILA led to the establishment of the Milltown Murals project, which played a significant role in Lakeland being proclaimed "Georgia's Historic Mural City" by her friend and former Governor, Sonny Perdue.
The resolution introduced by Representative Scott aims to honor Roquemore's legacy and the impact she had on the community. By renaming the Lakeland post office after her, it serves as a lasting tribute to her service and dedication.
