U.S. Representative Austin Scott and Western Caucus Chairman Representative Dan Newhouse have co-authored an op-ed for Agri-Pulse in celebration of National Agriculture Day. In the op-ed, they emphasized the vital role of agriculture in American life, expressing gratitude for the hard work of farmers and ranchers across the nation.
"Agriculture is a part of every aspect of American life. From the food on our kitchen tables to the clothes we wear and the values we hold, this industry is ingrained in the very fabric of our nation,” the representatives wrote. “America's farmers and ranchers dedicate their livelihoods to ensuring that our nation is fed, and we owe them a debt of gratitude for their hard work.”
Highlighting the economic significance of the agriculture industry, the op-ed underscored its contribution to the U.S. economy, with agriculture making up approximately 5.5% of the overall GDP and generating around $1.4 trillion. In states like Georgia and Washington, agriculture plays a crucial role, contributing billions of dollars to their respective economies.
The op-ed also acknowledged the challenges faced by farmers, particularly in light of regulatory actions by the Biden Administration. The representatives expressed concerns about increased input costs and burdensome regulations that hinder farmers' ability to thrive. They critiqued the administration for its perceived lack of support for the agricultural sector, stating, “it is clear rural America is on the back burner for this administration.”
As Members of Congress dedicated to advocating for American agriculture, Scott and Newhouse affirmed their commitment to elevating the industry and addressing barriers to success for farmers. They vowed to continue fighting for fair trade, reduced regulatory burdens, and support for rural communities.
On National Agriculture Day, the representatives extended their appreciation to the hardworking men and women who sustain the country. They emphasized that while National Agriculture Day is an annual observance, the dedication and resilience of farmers are demonstrated every day.
Dan Newhouse, representing Washington’s 4th Congressional District and serving as chairman of the Congressional Western Caucus, and Austin Scott, representing Georgia’s 8th Congressional District and holding key positions in agricultural committees, jointly penned the op-ed as a testament to their unwavering support for American agriculture.
